Again, I turn over the reigns to Rilo Santiago, bringing you the best in sports commentary from the past week...
This week in sports has been fairly boring, but leave it to Isaiah Thomas and his band of overpaid children to spice up the week. On Tuesday night the New York basketball Knicks played against the Chicago Bulls and the Bulls ended up beating the Knicks by the score of 98-69. Many of the Knicks felt that the Bulls “rubbed it in” and were trying to run up the score. This is troubling to me because the Knicks already used this as an excuse this year when they decided to “get rough” with the Denver Nuggets and damn near incite a riot in Madison Square Garden(Carmelo Anthony was suspended for over a quarter of the season for his role in this melee). The attitude of the Knicks players, in my opinion, has been adversely affected by the culture of “giving every kid a trophy”. These guys have made it to the NBA for a reason, because they have always at every level of basketball been able to be in a position to win. However when things are going bad they take the mindset of “how dare they try to score”. Look if you don’t want to get embarrassed, stop somebody, plain and simple, end of story. In the words of Herm Edwards, “you play to win the game”, so when you are losing and you can’t stop the rain, tuck it away in your memory and use it as motivation not as a reason to act like a 10 year old.
The Devil...not literally
I didn’t want to speak on this but…the “nappy headed hoe’s” comment by that guy Imus was one of, if not the most ridiculous things I’ve ever heard. You can clown a political figure, you can clown a professional, but these kids did nothing but play their rear ends off. They played one of the most complete games of the entire NCAA Women’s tournament in shutting down LSU in order to make it to the schools first championship appearance. Seeing this team lose to a Duke team in December by 40 points (and they didn’t complain about Duke running up the score) then come back in March and defeat that same Duke Team took some serious determination. These are the stories that Disney movies are made of but instead these young ladies had to endure being publicly humiliated. They did nothing to this man, have never met or referenced him in a post game interview. However he took it upon himself to degrade them several times and compare them to a men’s basketball team (“they look like the Toronto Raptors”). Personally, he said what he meant, felt and truly believes, that if you are a black woman in America and do not look a certain way you will be categorized as being rough, nappy or a ho.

On a side note I must give a shout out to Coach Roy Williams of the University of North Carolina for being inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. Also making it to the Hall of Fame was Phil Jackson. We congratulate these fools here at TYOTP.

At the risk of sounding like a non-conformist, I'm going to comment on Whitlock's piece...
When I was in NC from 2002-2004, I listened to both Imus and Rush Limbaugh on occasion. My step pops always taught me that if you're going to have an opinion about something it should be based in real life research, not groupthink (look it up, it's a psychological term). Know your enemy, or the battle is already lost was his advice. The flaw of that logic is, you sometimes find yourself agreeing with some of the positions people who your group says you should always disagree with. One of the things I've always struggled with in my life is balancing this way of going about things with conforming to any particular group, because I'd rather form my own opinions than tow the line...yet I digress...
Imus always struck me as a wannabe comedian. Does that mean he is incapable of racism? No, but it means that a lot of the things he says, and morning radio personalities say in general is more for shock factor, as shock=ratings in their particular business. Do I feel like he crossed the line, yes, but many of the things he says cross the line. It's his job. I feel he is right for having apologized and never should have said it, but am wary of the slippery slope we go down when we begin policing the commentary of individuals.
I agree with the corporations who pulled their advertising, but that is also them exercising free speech. Why advertise on a program that does not promote your agenda? However, I'm not so sure about all calls for his firing unless we are also going to be willing to accept an equivalent response from the other side. What I mean is, black comedians also tell racist jokes. Do we now allow them to come under fire, when the purpose of joking about these things is dealing with the pain of history's injustices through humor? If your answer is yes, then by all means allow Imus to be censored. If not, then I have a hard time accepting that position.
Jason Whitlock gets a lot of grief, even being fired from ESPN Page 2 last year. When I was a kid, I was always being called "oreo" or "not black" because I liked things that did not fall into line with the stated black position like rock music. Identity formation is a key component of the maturation process, so I can accept that from teenagers and children. It's just hard to believe that our cultural conscious is still caught in the "teen years" in which dissenting opinions are a mark of "non-blackness" as opposed to a person just having their own opinion and a place for debate.
In short, f#@ Imus, and free Imus at the same time...
